New Manchester History Hike this Saturday, Sept 26, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Location: Sweetwater Creek State Conservation Park, 1750 Mt. Vernon Road, Lithia Springs, GA

This mile-long hike (easy to moderate) focuses on the history of the Sweetwater Creek valley. Highlights of the tour include going inside the impressive Civil War era textile mill ruins and seeing the beautiful whitewater rapids.

Overnight Lake Fishing & Camping this weekend

Location: Sweetwater Creek State Conservation Park, 1750 Mt. Vernon Road, Lithia Springs, GA

Take the family on a mini-adventure less than 15 miles from Atlanta.  Bring a pop-up tent, sleeping bag, smacks and your fishing pole, and get ready to catch bass, bream and catfish all night.  Participants will post near the bait shop parking log.  Register in advance.

Celebrate National Public Lands Day this Saturday, Sept 26, from 9:00am – 1:00pm at Sweetwater Creek State Park

Location: Sweetwater Creek State Conservation Park, 1750 Mt. Vernon Road, Lithia Springs, GA

Come celebrate National Public Lands Day by volunteering at Sweetwater Creek Park.  You can plant plugs of Little Bluestem, Split-Beard Bluestem, and other native grasses around the Interpretive Center; cut/spray Chinese Privet, Autumn Olive on Nature Trails; trail maintenance and clean up.  Tools, gloves and refreshments will be provided.

Please call in advance to sign up for your preferred project.

New Manchester Days Festival is this weekend

Location: Sweetwater Creek State Conservation Park, 1750 Mt. Vernon Road, Lithia Springs, GA

Commemorate life in New Manchester, a Civil War-era mill community, with history tours of the five story ruins.  Civil War re-enactors, artifact displays and living history presentations.  There will also be a reptile program Saturday at noon and food is available on both Saturday & Sunday.

Villa Rica Gold Rush Festival 2009, Saturday, Sept 12th, 2009

Come to Historic Downtown Villa Rica along Main Street and celebrate the prospectors who found gold in Villa Rica. 

The festival encompasses a a 5k road race, a community parade, handcrafted clothing, crafts and works of art, good food, and an evening concert.

West Georgia Hot Air Balloon Festival is coming up!

Location:  Villa Rica Civic Center & Sports Complex, 1605 Highway 61.

The Villa Rica Parks & Recreation Department hosts the 1st annual West Georgia Hot Air Balloon Festival.  There’ll be more than 15 balloon pilots and crews from across the eastern United States to race.  Come to see the races and face painting, inflatable water slide, full Atlanta Braves Mobile Experience, the full Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers Experiences.  Live bands will perform from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.
